It is constructed from southern elm (jumu), also known as zelkova or red elm which has distinctly more intricate wood grain in comparison to northern Chinese elm. The brass hardware is a later replacement as the original would have been robbed during Mao's cultural revolution. As can be seen from the green table depicted
