The mission is a fully functioning Roman Catholic mission and a historic landmark in Tucson Arizona. It was founded as a Catholic mission by Father Eusebio Kino in 1692. Construction started in 1783 and the work was completed in 1797. Arizona was part of New Spain during this period. The mission became part of the United States in 1854 with the Gadsden Purchase.
